Climate COPs and SBs

As part of its mandate, AKP has been the de facto lead of national-level CSO delegates from the Philippines. It serves to lead the coordination of on-site CSO participants in strategic engagements throughout the climate conferences, especially with the Philippine government delegation. It also conducts capacity-building activities to prepare delegates on their respective endeavors in these environments.

From COP28 to COP30, aside from monitoring the progress of the climate negotiations, AKP has conducted the following activities:

AKP and its members meet with the Philippine government delegation on-site at climate COPs, as part of the practice of upholding transparency and accountability. During these events, the CSOs lobby for more ambitious climate positions and present ways forward for collaborations with the national government during and after the climate conference.

AKP leads the conduct of a series of CSO coordination meetings for the entirety of the climate COPs, including at SBs. These serve as platforms for delegates to present the latest updates on the ongoing negotiations, provide support for side events and other planned engagements, and discuss relevant climate news back home.

AKP actively participates in side events inside the Blue Zone. Since 2023, its leadership either co-organized or participated in a total of 21 side events in climate COPs, more than any other Philippine CSO. These engagements tackle a variety of key climate issues, from loss and damage to just transition, from emphasizing regional collaborations to presenting locally-led best practices.

Together with member Center for Environmental Concerns – Philippines, AKP has hosted an exhibit booth within the Blue Zone. Through printed and audiovisual materials, this space showcases the realities faced by environmental defenders on the ground in the Philippines and examples of grassroots-based solutions to responding to climate and environmental threats.

Through its lead Living Laudato Si’ Philippines, AKP co-organizes a commemorative mass and fellowship dinner with COP delegates at the conference’s host-city. This is in remembrance to the communities hit hardest by super-typhoon Haiyan and other climate extremes, while also providing a space for the conference participants to build rapport and discuss other matters aside from the negotiating issues.
